What's going on when your eyelid begins twitching? It's called Fasciculation and it's really quite common.
The twitch may happen in one or both eyes and can happen suddenly and severely. What's more, once it begins, it can bother you for a few days (or more!) and after that, just vanish.
Eye specialists are not certain what causes it, but it might be identified with stress and anxiety or being overly exhausted. Sometimes the reason for the twitching may never be found.
"The most common causes of twitching eyes include stress, lack of sleep, and excess caffeine," says Alberto Martinez,MD. an opthamologist in Bethesda, Md., and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthamology.
Other reasons can include:
Eye irritants
Eye strain
Dry eye
In uncommon cases, twitching eyelid may be a early indicator of a neurological issue, for example, blepharospasm (an anomalous spasm or blinking of the eyelids) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosos (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Serious twitching in which the lid totally closes, are frequently brought about by irritation of the cornea (the surface covering the iris and pupi) or the conjuctiva (the film that lines the eyelids and the whites of the eye).
In the event that your twitching does not go away in a wekk, or it gets worse, or if it's just driving you crazy, you should go see an eye specialist. He or she will perform an extensive eye exam to rule out any diseases or eye conditions such as dry eye.
As a rule, a minor eyelid twitch does not need any type of treatment and will go away by itself. So don't stress too much over a little twitch!
